How to Clean and Paint Hardware

Hi there, have you found the perfect piece of furniture to flip? Now it’s time for the prep work. One part you might not think to clean and paint is the hardware. Hardware can become expensive to replace especially if your piece has many drawers. With just a few steps you can have knobs and pulls that look great with little cost.

Bar Keepers Friend is a great way to clean up those dingy hardware pulls. The first step is to add a couple tablespoons into a bowl with a small amount of water. The powder and water should look like paste. Using a sponge, wipe the hardware and let it sit for one minute. Next, wipe off the paste with the sponge and the grim will come off. If you are having a hard time getting into the tight spots you can use a soft toothbrush. Finally, wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Next, if you plan to paint the hardware, I like to give it a gentle sanding with a 220-grit sandpaper. This will help the primer and paint adhere to the metal. I like to use Rust-Oleum Paint and Primer in One for my hardware. Rust-Oleum metallics are a fun way to add some glam to your hardware. The next time you are thinking about replacing your furniture’s hardware, try cleaning them first. You might be amazed at the results.
