Have you ever watched a DIY show and thought, I could do that? Some projects are fairly easy to do yourself, for example, hanging pictures or painting your front door. However, some might need a little more skill or at least a class or two on how to do it the right way.
When we bought our house in 2005, the kitchen did not have a backsplash. This was fine with me at least for a while. Once I started watching all those HGTV shows I started to wonder if it was something I could tackle myself. I looked into a tile class at my local hardware store and signed up. I was super excited to learn the basics and had a great teacher. Now all I had to do was pick out my tile and get started. Why is picking out tile so difficult, or is it just me? There are so many choices and it took me way too long to pick. Finally, I decided on a gray subway tile with a little shine to it. It went perfect with our gray accent wall. I lucked out when I was buying my supplies because my tile class instructor was working that day. He helped me find all the material I would need, these items included mortar, tile spacers, notched trowel, grout, just to name a few. The most important tool I needed was the tile cutter. I rented a tile cutter but you could also rent a wet saw (I wasn’t that brave).
Now I had everything I needed to get my project done. I was nervous it was going to be a disaster but my husband was confident I could do it. I just took it one step at a time. Once you get the first few tiles on and start the pattern then it is pretty easy to continue that pattern across the entire wall. Was it perfect? No, but that’s okay because perfect wasn’t my goal. The whole project took 8 hours which I think is pretty good considering I did it alone. Now when people come over and say “Wow, I really like your backsplash”. I can say, “Thanks, I did it myself”. And that feels pretty good. So, if you are considering a DIY project that is out of your comfort zone, I would say do some research, find a class and most importantly just take it one step at a time and before you know it you will have the job done. Then you too can say “Thanks, I did it myself”.
